Audit is now a statutory requirement in almost all NHS departments. Its aim is to set standards and improve performance in order to achieve clinical excellence; however, audit often fails to meet these targets. This article discusses the different processes involved in conducting an effective audit and highlights some of the problems that are often encountered in the process.
