On-the-job training: ward and clinic

Jane MacDougall, MD FRCOG MEd, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist

Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, CB2 2AW, UK. email: jane.macdougall{at}addenbrookes.nhs.uk

Calman reforms and the European Working Time Directive have led to a reduction in trainees' hours and length of training. There is an increasing need to provide focused and high quality training, yet this is difficult given the increasing demands on consultant time. Young doctors also need to be encouraged to become self-directed learners who work well in multidisciplinary teams. This article aims to explore different ways of training on wards and in clinics and suggests how trainers can help trainees to take advantage of the many opportunities for learning available in these settings.
