Preparing for the MRCOG examination is a critical and stressful time for trainees. There is no shortage of material and courses available: the problem is to find the right kind of revision literature to make things a little easier.
This book is an excellent find. It is logical, easy to read and not dull which is vital. It challenges the trainee. Since it is evidence based, it is ideal for independent studying and revision.
The chapters are mainly divided into multiple choice questions (MCQs) and short essay-style questions. A further subdivision into obstetrics and gynaecology makes it easy to comprehend. There are 118 obstetric MCQs and 72 gynaecology MCQs, with detailed answers in a separate section. Each question includes a reference at the bottom from the innovative textbook Obstetrics and Gynaecology An Evidence-based Text for MRCOG, by the same editorial team.
Similarly, there are 46 obstetric and 31 gynaecology short essay-style questions, with superb answers that stress the particular points that should be included and the proportion of marks achievable. It is a refreshing change from many other books, which show a very dogmatic approach to answering these questions.
The content tests both theoretical and practical knowledge and covers the curriculum within the RCOG trainee logbook. The book is also suitable for international medical graduates with little UK experience, as it exposes them to the local practice.
Overall, I think this is excellent value for money and works as a fantastic self-assessment aid. I have successfully used it and I would thoroughly recommend it.
