The authors are clinically experienced and well placed to write this short, easy-to-read book of eight chapters. It is a must for all clinical midwives and obstetricians who suture the perineum and/or give postpartum care. From the beginning the book approaches the subject in a very practical manner and it is a good educational tool. The chapter by Professor Kettle describes continuous suture techniques, allowing it to be used as a step-by-step guide, which is very comprehensive and well referenced. Using this book will enable you to refresh your own practice and improve your suturing technique.
It is heartening and timely that space is dedicated in later chapters to postnatal care of the perineum. The chapter on postpartum management of the perineum reminds us of basic good practice that can reduce maternal morbidity and which is often not apparent.
I found the chapter on statistics of reproductive issues in less developed countries by Karen Rosen very interesting and a harsh reminder that health care is not globally equitable. The concluding remarks and recommendations to improve practice are internationally applicable and we should all be striving to achieve them.
