This book is a must-have for midwives and obstetricians. It describes the social context of female genital mutilation and reminds us all of the shocking statistics and outcomes of this practice. It also has chapters on the clinical presentation and management of mutilated women. I found the diagrams to be very useful as a visual aid for the women I see antenatally, as often they are not aware of the extent of their mutilation.
Child protection issues and legislation are addressed in a very comprehensive manner. My only criticism would be that the option of women who have been mutilated not to have defibulation has not been addressed.
Overall, this is a book that can be dipped into and used as a source of reference or to teach women more about themselves. It is a subject that no practising midwife or obstetrician can ignore.
